Totally Locally West Bridgford Town Champion, “the nicest lady ever, and an all round wonder woman extraordinaire (she’s also the most modest lady you might ever meet so she might not admit to that!)”  Chris Sands – Totally Locally founder

By Karina Wells.
Many years ago when I had just arrived in Holland I received a note through the letter box that the local neighbourhood was organising an Eco Team. A group of 8 or so people, who would come together once a month for 8 months and find way to reduce waste, electricity, gas, water and transport and find better ways to shop.

To be honest, I was not interested in the Eco bit, but for the sake of making friends and getting to know people I went along and really enjoyed it. So much so that when I returned back to the UK, I set up the first Eco Team inspiring thousands of housholds up and down the country to become aware of their actions. I am no longer involved in Eco Teams (other than being keen to promote sustainable behaviour of any kind) but this has led to other initiatives.

The Shared Garden Project, The West Bridgford Skills Exchange and latterly Totally Locally.
What had all these initiative in common? They had a strong and simple message, were easy to do and without you even realising it, they have an enormous impact.
I wish I could contact that lady or gentleman (or even youngster) who popped the Eco Team leaflet through my letter box over 15 years ago to let them know how the dropping of the leaflet in Holland has led to a changed town in the UK.
The moral of the story: Whatever you do, do something!

Totally Locally is about opening your eyes to the great independent shops and businesses in your town. It’s here to encourage you to turn into the door of that shop you walk past every day. Go on, give it a try – there’s a good chance you’ll want to go back. It’s about supporting your local growers, producers and services: be it furniture makers, farmers, accountants or bakers.

Totally Locally is about people. Great people. People who care about what they do, what they grow, what they make. And people like you who care about what they buy and where they shop. It’s about a collective responsibility to support our local businesses. Because when we do our towns thrive.

And that’s about it really!

The Magic Tenner Campaign

(or how to turn £10 into £50!)

That got your interest didn’t it?

The Magic Tenner campaign is all about how money flows around the local economy and highlighting just how much impact local businesses and shop have in the community.

This part of the campaign is really important as it starts to link up supply chains between businesses that people hadn’t really thought of. The key to this is the poster that can go in the window or notice board of any hairdressers, accountants, shop or restaurant. This part of the campaign is when making your town that little bit better focuses on more than just shops. (more…)
