Fuzz Guitars

Du -du – du, dududu duh……. (oops sorry about that!).

For former headteacher Colin Hyland, music+education=good business for Guitar Base. The Abbey Road-based shop has teamed up with MLC Academy, who will be giving tuition in electric, bass and acoustic guitar, drums, vocals, piano and keyboard in the lovely refurbished on-site music rooms.

Colin, ex-headteacher at Lenton Primary School in Nottingham, already runs music education classes at Abbey and Heymann Primary Schools in West Bridgford, Cropwell Bishop Primary School and Robert Miles Primary in Bingham. And he’s keen to work with more! “I’ve written to headteachers of every primary school in south Nottinghamshire and all headteachers and music department heads of south Notts secondary schools about working with their pupils. Five secondary schools have already responded. “We’re community based and all the tutors and staff who work in the shop are passionate about music. What MLC Academy will do is offer different things to us, like music based qualifications, as well as teaching those who just want to play for fun.”

Previously based in Gordon Road between 1999 and 2005, Fuzz sells a huge variety of bass, electric and acoustic guitars, sheet music and accessories for lots of other instruments too, -  saxophone reeds for example (something Jimi Hendrix never bothered his head about!).  “We also do guitar repairs and upgrades,” adds Colin.

In true Totally Locally style Colin said “I’m local to West Bridgford and there was no music shop in the area – so I opened one!”. Nice.

Guitar Base likes to do their bit for  charity. “For Maggie’s [the cancer care charity] we had the logos put on a really nice American Fender guitar,” says Colin. “It was bought for £3,000 at auction by a telephone bidder from Miami.”

Good to know that the guys practice what they Totally Locally preach too.  “We’ve just had new carpets from Home Craft in Rugby Road,West Bridgford fitted in the music rooms. The butcher in Abbey Road is a keen guitarist and comes in here. My wife could live at the Farmers’ Market when it’s in West Bridgford. We always go Totally Locally if we can in whatever we do as a business.” Yep, it’s that good old money go round idea again.

So a brilliant Hidden Gem for all you budding rockers, indie kids or classical wannabees, go take a look.

But a word of warning – they’ve probably heard Smoke On The Water at least 15 times that day…… Du -du – du, dududu duh………….

Favourite shop in WB. Bought my first electric guitar in there – gone on to buy 2 more. Plus amps, violins, pedals etc. Always well looked after and unlike web- based retailers you can try before you buy and get sound advice from good musicians. A real community gem.

  2. This is one of the best shops I’ve ever been in. Both our sons had lessons with teachers at the shop and we have bought at least 5 instruments from them. The after sales service is exceptional and their commitment to community matches it.
